What to Pack in a Gym Bag

The gym bag should be light enough to carry on a commute and complete enough that you don't need to come back. Eleven items in, anything else stays at home.

The 11

  1. Microfibre towel. Dries you faster than the cotton one the gym lends.
  2. Quick-dry t-shirt and shorts/leggings. A complete change.
  3. Clean socks. Always one extra pair than you think.
  4. Underwear or sports bra. Same logic.
  5. Stainless-steel water bottle. 750ml minimum.
  6. Toiletry pouch: deodorant, face wash, small body wash, tiny shampoo, razor.
  7. Hair tie / brush / cap. One small hair-management item.
  8. Flip-flops or slides. For the shower floor. Non-negotiable.
  9. Plastic or wet bag. For the wet, sweaty change.
  10. A snack. Banana, protein bar, anything that survives in a bag for hours.
  11. Phone charger and earbuds. Tucked in a small pouch so they don't tangle.

What to leave out

  • Full-size toiletries. Decant into 50ml bottles.
  • Hardcover books and laptops, unless you're commuting straight to a workspace.
  • Loose change and jewelry. Leave in the locker, ideally at home.

The bag itself

  • One main compartment, one shoe pocket, one wet pouch. More compartments = more time spent searching.
  • Water-resistant fabric (nylon, ripstop, technical canvas).
  • Avoid leather. A gym bag will get sweaty and rained on.

The system

Pack the gym bag the night before. The friction of packing in the morning is what kills the workout, not the workout.
