The Beginner's Guide to Thrifting

Thrifting works if you go in with a system. Without one, you'll buy seven items, wear two, and wonder why your closet feels chaotic. The system is four steps: where to look, what to inspect, what to grab without thinking, and what to walk past.

Where to look

  • Charity shops: cheap, lots of volume, lots of nothing. Best for unicorn finds, not curation.
  • Estate sales: excellent for outerwear, leather, and quality basics from one consistent owner.
  • Curated vintage shops: already filtered for you. Pay for the curation.
  • Online (Vinted, Depop, eBay): best for specific searches, worst for serendipity.

What to inspect, in order

  1. Smell. Mothball or musty smell rarely washes out. Hard pass.
  2. Armpit and crotch. Yellowing and pilling are permanent.
  3. Seams. Pull gently. Loose stitching means fabric is tired.
  4. Zippers and buttons. Zip them, button them. Replacements are cheap; broken openings on a fragile garment aren't.
  5. Tag. Country of origin, fabric content, size. (Vintage sizing runs small. Assume two sizes down from modern.)

What to grab without thinking

  • Cashmere, silk, wool, linen at any price.
  • Leather (jackets, bags, belts) in good condition.
  • Heritage menswear (Brooks Brothers, J. Press, Barbour, Burberry) in your size.
  • Plain workwear (Carhartt, Dickies). These age beautifully.

What to skip

  • Fast-fashion brands at thrift prices that aren't actually cheap (a $15 Zara dress at the thrift is worse value than a $20 new one).
  • Items needing tailoring you can't realistically afford.
  • Trends from the last five years. They'll come back, but you don't need to participate this round.

The discipline

Try it on. Always. The fitting room is the only filter that matters. If a thrift store doesn't have one, hold the piece up to your body in a mirror and walk away if you can't tell.
